The Postal Stamp Vegetable Garden {A Review}

So let's talk about my garden. We've lived up on our hill now for almost 8 years. And I've put in a garden for 5 of those years. Unfortunately, it has never amounted to much besides a lot of sweat and a few tears. Our soil is just clay (True story, the kids make things out of the clay, set it in the sun to dry, and have a piece of pottery for their play house). So needless to say, I've grown few vegetables and more weeds than I even want to think about.

In fact, weeding is a job that is impossible to accomplish. After the soil is tilled and things are planted, the ground turns to rock and pulling weeds...Ha! It's just not happening.

Poppa and I finally decided it was time to invest in some garden boxes, fill  them with soil, manure, peat moss, and some other good things, and hope for the best.

Working with a smaller space is new to me, so when the review opportunity for The Postal Stamp Vegetable Garden came up, I was super excited to check it out.

The book includes: ideas for planning your garden, an ideal soil mix, how to get your space/ground ready, when and how to plant, how to water, veggie and herb selection suggestions, plants that work well together, how to compost, seed sources, and how to control pests, diseases, and animals visitors. The list of veggies and herbs has tips for planting, crop stretching, recommended varieties, typical problems, harvesting, storage, and growing tips.

A few plan ideas are provided to get you started and ideas for crop stretching with sketches for what it would look like.

So we've been working diligently to plan and get things together for this spring...

Our boxes have been set up and at this moment are being filled with soil by a very hard worker. That same dear one, helped the kids fill up old milk jugs with soil and start some seeds. Our stone is coming next week for our paths.

We've started our garden plan. I've got to get busy on this! There are some things that I want to get planted last week. :)

My helper also created this grid from dowel rods and yarn. I just pick it up and move it from box to box as I'm planting.

We've got our seed packs ready to go!

And we are armed with our book.

This year, May will be devoted to working in the garden for a school project. There is so much to learn and I can't wait for us to study The Postal Stamp Garden! Warning...I did discover a couple of places where profanity was used in reference to watering. You may not want your child to read this one on his/her own.

This book is terrific for learning about gardening in small spaces, gardening vertically, and taking care of your vegetables. You can learn more about  The Postal Stamp Vegetable Garden and check out an author bio, too.

I received a free copy of The Postal Stamp Vegetable Garden from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way for writing the review. All opinions I have expressed are my own or those of my family.
