First Thoughts
We really loved using Heroes and Heroines (see our review) from Golden Prairie Press, so we were excited when Amy offered Countdown to Thanksgiving to us to review!

What it is all About
Countdown to Thanksgiving is like an advent to the holiday. The countdown begins 14 days before Thanksgiving and runs right into Thanksgiving day. Each day contains lesson building stories and articles (almost all of them were written in the 1800s and early 1900s) and an activity. The activities include: a calendar, a hunt, poems, a skit, games, crafts, writing, cooking, a quiz, and Thanksgiving Songs.

Time Frame
Countdown to Thanksgiving has daily lessons over a 2 week period, including Saturdays and Sundays. Each daily section of the countdown can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes (sometimes longer with some activities) and it really works great as a whole family activity.

Our Experience
Every morning, before we do anything else, we have family time. We gather together and sing a hymn, pray, and learn a scripture verse. We decided to use this time for the story of the day.

Ceesa is a wonderful reader. She can read just anything I hand her and is veracious. She is so fast that at times her lips can't keep up with what she is reading when she reads aloud. We used the stories as an opportunity for her to read to the whole family. She would read the stories that we printed first to herself and then she would read them to the rest of us as we snuggled close.

Reading Stories

We chose to sprinkle the activities throughout the day. Some were great afternoon activities and others were better suited to when Poppa was home. With Wheel, it is much easier to cook when Poppa is at home.

Calendar
We aren't able to play the music on the piano, but we enjoyed looking up the songs on the computer and singing along.

Hymn Singing

We have a family tradition for Thanksgiving. Starting on November 1, we place a cornecopia on the counter with little slips of paper. Each of our family members write some things that we are thankful for on each slip, fold them, and put them in the cornecopia. Then on Thanksgiving we take random slips out and read them cuddled on the sofa. Starting this year we are going to add a Thanksgiving countdown as one of our family traditions.
