940 Saturdays: Family Activities & a Keepsake Journal {A Review}

As someone who keeps a collection of ideas for Joyful Moments for our homeschool, a summer bucket list that I'm always adding more suggestions to, and a running list of Joyful "Whole"-istic Homeschool Learning Opportunities, I am always looking for more ideas. I wasn't disappointed when I cracked open my review copy of 940 Saturdays: Family Activities & a Keepsake Journal.



Some of the suggestions we've done in the past...

put on puppet shows,

been in community theater,

gone to a dairy farm,

went on nature hikes,

made leaf art,

gone to story time,

made greeting cards,

launched rockets,

made pine cone feeders,

sailed toy boats,

went paddle boating,

built a pendulum

made robots

and cooked together

just to name a few.

And these are all suggestions in 940 Saturdays: Family Activities & a Keepsake Journal. Plus lots and lots more. "940 Saturdays is part menu, part memory book!" and provides "seeds of ideas" for how you can create and document Saturdays to remember for years to come. 

940 Saturdays Keepsake Journal has 2 Saturdays per page. Each entry is numbered with a place to record the date. The last few pages contain a Developmental Milestone continuum. You can use the journal to record your Saturdays by journaling, sketching, pasting photos, making poetry, attaching mementos, or just about anyway you'd like to remember the day.

At the back of the book, you will find an envelope.

In the envelope, their is a 31 page booklet that contains the Family Activities. There is a brief introduction to the journal and a list of activity caveats.

The Family Activity book is divided by subjects like Backyard and Park Play, Cooking and Baking, Electricity and Energy, Kites, Music, Role Play, Trains, and lots more. In fact, there are over 70 topics provided.

In each section, there are suggestions for different age bands: 0-2, 2-5, 5-11, 11-14, and 14-18.

Some topics have a plan it section that includes field trip ideas in addition to those in the age bands.

 Some of the activities are very simple suggestions. For instance, "Eat Cheerios in high chair or draw with crayons while you're making dinner."

Others require more time and preparation. An example, would be a visit to an air and space museum.



If you are looking to create family memories, this is an excellent way to do so. If you need ideas for some family fun, you will find an exhaustive list in the activity section. If you would like to keep a memento of your family activities, this will help you keep track of your special times. And it would make an excellent gift for a new parent.

Note: There are a few places where an acronym is used in reference to children at older ages driving cars and applying for college, that we view as inappropriate in our family. You will also find a section topic entitled magic. It contains suggestions for learning tricks with illusion.
