Planes, Trains and Automobiles! with Falcons of France

April's book share with Poppins Book Nook is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles! We took a look at the book Falcons of France by Charles Nordhoff & James Hall.

Selden heads to France in the summertime of 1917 to join the Layfayette Flying Corps during WWI. First, he has to go to the Bleriot School at Avord to learn to fly; however, the students of Bleriot learn to fly without an instructor. They start with a plane that doesn't fly and advance through until they can do dizzying stunts in a Spad. If flight school isn't adventurous enough, many dangers await the young pilots. We'd recommend the book for ages 12 and up. ***Warning***There is some foul language sprinkled throughout the book.

After reading Falcons of France, I began thinking some about my grandfather, who was in WWII. He received the Croix de Guerre for serving in France. And we thought it would be nice to combine some genealogy with our schools studies.

Croix de Guerre 1939-1945 (WW II)

So we decided to do some family research with and share a download with you! This could be used for any family member in any war...we've used it with my father-n-law (Vietnam), gggg grandfather (civil war), gggggg grandfather (revolutionary war), and of course, grandfather (WWII).

What a FANTASTIC lesson! We've touched on genealogy but I love the notebooking page! Perhaps we should "interview" pawpaw!

That sounds like a good book. Thank you for the language warning. I love the notebooking page. I wish we had someone to write about for it. :)

I just remembered my Grandpa was in World War 2. Thanks for the notebooking page!

I've spent several summers studying our genealogy and tying our school studies into it is so meaningful.

The language was "natural" sounding in the context, but I definitely found it important to note.

We've family in many wars; including Vietnam, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War.

My Grandfather would never talk about his experiences, so we've pieced some things together from what he did say and research. He even got rid of the photos he had from the war. While I respect his feelings, I want my children to know the sacrifice he and so many others gave. :)

I love involving Grandparents in our history lessons. My Aunt recently shared a bag with me of my Dad's army uniform, and it is a treasure to share with my kids. I'm going to add this book to our reading list.

This is a great lesson and the printables are terrific. I love that you used the book to expand young minds, then you gave them a family history lesson too.

Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
