7 Strategies for Acquiring a Large Vocabulary

Have a child that you would like to have a more extensive vocabulary? Here are some things you can do to support him.
  • Have lots of conversations
  • Read stories to him with challenging vocabulary
  • Read poetry and point out words that you find interesting
  • Play vocabulary games (2-3 and 4-5)
  • Study parts of words: roots, origins, meaning, analysis, morphemic elements, etc.)
  • Keep a Word Notebook to record interesting words
  • Encourage them to notice the words that they don’t know by ~marking with sticky notes~using the dictionary online for physical one to determine what it means~ask someone~make a guess based on context
  • Draw pictures of the new words
