Homeschool in the Woods: Hands-on Composer Activity Pack {A Review}

We've been studying composers for several years.

So when we were given the opportunity to review the Hands-On History Activity-Pak: Composers (a Lap Book-$18.95 for the download version) from Home School in the Woods, I was really excited.

We especially were interested in the information about the eras of music, the orchestra, the opera (as that is what we are studying now), the timeline figures, and the MP3 file of popular pieces.

How we used it:
With very little instruction I was able to tell the girls what I would like them to do with the pages. We don't generally use lapbooks, but the various activities did not beg much explaining. I gave them one component at a time and spread it out over several days. We did most of the work as instructed; however, we added familiar composers to our regular history timeline.

What I liked
I especially liked the MP3 file with the pieces by various composers. We used the music appreciation pages to write about the various pieces we listened to, adding our interpretation of the piece. We've completed similar composer pages that I made for them, so the idea was very familiar to the girls.

What the kids liked
Ceesa enjoys learning interesting details about composers, so she was pleased to add more music history under her belt. Jo-Jo said, "I liked getting to glue and color during school. We could use the composers to add to our timeline."

What they've learned
Jo-Jo learned that there were composers in different periods and Ceesa said, "We've been learning a lot about opera. Opera is played all over the world. It is a story that is sung."

Wish list
I'd love to see some background on the composers and pieces. We enjoy hearing about composers' lives, where they live, and what circumstances surrounded the different works. I think this would make an excellent addition to the existing materials.

Recommendations
I'd recommend this Lap Book for any school age children that have an interest in composers or some background in studying music and for those of you who enjoy lapbooking.

Wishing you homeschool blessings,
