Kwik Stix {Review} Solid Tempera Paint Sticks & Giveaway!!

The Pencil Grip Inc. has lots of nifty products like...you guessed it...pencil grips, but that isn't all. They carry peel away whiteboard eraser layers, fine point dry erase pens, safety shield scissors, and magnetic whiteboard erasers to name a few of the innovative products they offer. And they just sent us a sample of 12 Kwik Stix's to review. And they are so much fun, I can't wait to tell you about them. (We also received some extras like a couple of sheets of construction paper, pens, and pencil grips as a bonus).

What are Kwik Stix?
Kwik Stix are Solid Tempera Paints. They are similar in size to glue sticks with a cap and twist at the bottom to roll up the paint. They are non-toxic and dry in 90 seconds. While they are paint, they in no way resemble liquid. Instead they glide across the page, like a lipstick.

They are available in packs of 6 (like we are giving away, see the details below), packs of 12 (like we are reviewing), and a 96 classroom pack of 8 sets of the 12 colors.

Kwik Stix can be used on various surfaces: paper, posters, wood, cardboard, and canvas.

How we Used Them
The first project we tried out was to make a picture inspired by Piet Mondrian. I didn't ask the kids to use straight black lines, but they used black lines and colored in the white spaces. Li said that they looked like stained glass windows. And of course true Mondrian work would only include yellow, red, and blue, but alas, we found we wanted to use more colors. Our Kwik Sticks were too tempting.

Since I wanted the color to run off the page, we put another sheet of paper underneath for the lines to run into. We found that the colors don't saturate the paper or bleed through the page.
Li couldn't resist making some pictures in his.

Momma's Work

Ceesa wanted a monochromatic page, but found that she had to add more colors because of the number of boxes.

Next, I asked the kids to use large white sheets of paper to make gift wrap for Christmas. These would make wonderful stocking stuffers by the way!

The size of the sticks really worked well for coverage on the large pieces of paper.

Finally I let the kids make whatever they wanted.

I've found that the kids don't always cap the paints tightly, To save the paints from drying out, I go through and snap the lids on tight when they are finished.

Wishlist
This set of sticks is thick, we'd love to see The Pencil Grip come out with a fine point stick as well.

Recommendation
First let me say that we love art even when it is messy, but these are for those of you who don't mind the mess and for those that avoid art projects because of the mess. They aren't completely mess proof; however, they dry so quickly that even when they get on hands, the paint doesn't smear onto other things.

And somehow Li managed to get some on the floor. Although, this may have been Wheel's doing as we was watching for his opportunity to try out a Kwik Stix too. He may have contributed to this...

Future
Kwik Stix are a great addition to our art supply closet and I'm so glad that we got to review them. Even after I was done asking the kids to try them out, they kept on creating on their own.
