Art: Negative Spaces and Scratch Paper

We've been working on studying negative space.

Negative space is the empty space around the subject.

One of the paintings that we've been studying from John Singleton Copley is a great example of negative space.

"Paul Revere"

Scratch Art paper is perfect for this study. The black of the top layer of paper allows for the artist to focus on the shade and texture of the object. It is in startling contrast to the lightness of the paper underneath.

What a great idea...to use scratch off paper to demonstrate negative space. Quentin would like this, I think.

They turned out nicely. I especially like Jo-Jo's bird!

My daughter was interested in this - she has an art lesson coming up using scratch art.

The girls can't wait to do more.

This is a neat idea. Do you use a curriculum to tell you what art objective to do? Art is one of my weaknesses. We do crafts, but our co-op is attempting to do more art instruction. Thanks for your post!

I love it! I may have to add this project to our art class rotation! Pinning it!

This is awesome! I'm not artistically talented at all so not sure I could handle that! I'm planning on letting my husband teach art!

I am SO bad about avoiding art in our house because I do not like messy! This looks like a fun one though that even I could manage. haha Thanks for the inspiration!

It was a really easy project with little mess. Sometimes we start with a medium and then the season chooses the topic, sometimes I use great projects we find online, and sometimes we use a curriculum. This project was inspired by Artistic Pursuits. :)

I remember doing scratch art years ago, but I'm not sure I've ever done it with my kids. Thanks for sharing some art inspiration!
