Plutarch: Nicias

Nicias lived about 470-413 BC in the Athens. He was a wealthy politian and general during the Peloponnesian war.


He seemed afraid of the people and would often bribed them to win their favor. Many writers make sport of his cowardice. It is believed that he was very superstitious and would never except credit for anything he had his hand in, either good or bad.


However, he was successful in negotiating peace between Athens and Sparta called the Peace of Nicias.
