Winter Cattail Study

Nature study makes me so happy.

This year we are doing a
whole year cattail study.

We started it in October...

We just made it back to our patch this week for our winter visit.

Things look a bit different...the leaves are no longer higher then the stem with the plant and both the stems and the leaves are brown.

This time we were able to see the water.
Cattails grow by the roadside if there is a water source on the other side. In the fall, we knew there had to be water, but we couldn't see it. We also discovered that the water around our cattails did not recede. It is still several inches  deep.

We found that the seeds (balloons) will float, so we speculate that the wind blows them off of the cattail and into the water, then the water will push them where they will grow.

Wishing you homeschool blessings,

Cattails are such a wonderful plant to do a year-round study of. We have done that, too.

I like the idea of focusing on one thing. It may help me actually do nature study by making it simpler. Thanks for stopping by and I'm following you back.

I tried just doing whatever we found for awhile, but I need to be able to prepare. I don't know a whole lot off-hand and need to read ahead.
