Charlotte Mason Lesson Planning

Reading about Charlotte Mason's methods is so inspiring. Recently I was reading For the Children's Sake.

Among other things, there were samples of lesson plans used in Charlotte Mason schools. I found these very interesting, so I made myself an outline to see if I could mimic the style of planning.

*Set objective
1) Make connection to something already studied or previous knowledge.
2) Involve child in the discussion.
3) Read or do the experience.
4) Discuss the point/objective.
5) Summarize with a narration.

So for Minn of the Mississippi,

my lesson would look like this...

*Notice how Holling Clancy Holling's style as a writer works from piece to piece.
1) We are reading a new book called Minn of the Mississippi. It is by Holling Clancy Holling. We have read several of his books before: Paddle-to-the-Sea, Tree in the Trail, Pagoo, and Seabird.

2) What do you remember about these stories?
3) Read chapter 1.
4) In each of Holling's books, he takes us on a journey-through the ocean, around the Great Lakes, across the west, around the world...this time we are going to go on a trip down the Mississippi River. Share a map of the United States. Ask for the child to identify any places that are already known. Draw in the Mississippi River.
5) Tell me about this first chapter.

Not to painful. I think the hardest part for me will be choosing my objective for each book/experience. We already narrate and spend a lot of time talking about the things we read and do that it will be natural.

This year I'm going to try to incorporate this style with lots of different subjects: composer study, artist, characterization, setting/place, geography, time period, theme, experiments, Bible readings, poetry, folk songs, hymns, and field trips.

Although, I think once a day is sufficient. The rest of the time, I want my kids to be the ones responsible for thinking about their own objectives for their learning.

Learning Latin

We're studying Latin for the first time this year. I've never studied it, let alone taught it before so I'm a bit nervous. We are using Latina Christiana and have both the student book and audio cd.

Although the lessons in the book are set up a bit different, we've made our own study. Our lessons will look like this:

1) Each day we will listen to the new word. Say it. Translate it.
2) Every week, we will practice a sentence or saying. Listen to it, say it, and translate it.
3) Recite the table blessing and song with the audio cd until we can do it without the cd.

We will continue this until we finish the book. After several weeks, we will add some of the free sessions from Visual Latin.

Amy from Peru at Fischer Academy International recommends these sources. We are planning to try them out.

Daniel Defoe's Life: A Timeline

We are reading Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe.

Defoe was an Englishman and many very interesting events occurred during his lifetime, so we are making a timeline to look at some of the interesting things that happened.

Defoe himself held many occupations. He was a writer, trader, journalist, and secret agent for William III. He had 8 children and was thrown into jail on more than one occasion for his controversial writings and even had to file bankruptcy.

1660-Cromwell is officially overthrown and Charles II is restored to the English throne. Oliver Cromwell and the Parliament overthrow Charles I.

1665-The Great Bubonic Plague spreads through England, killing 75,000 people. The Plague originated in Asia and spread in some part through the Silk and Spice Trade Routes.

1666-Great Fire of London started in a bakery on Pudding Lane and spread rapidly throughout London destroying homes, churches, a cathedral, and city authorities buildings.

1685-Monmouth Rebellion incited to remove King James II from the throne. Defoe was a member. Although he escaped death, many were beheaded.
