Butterflies at the Windows

I love natural light,
so I don't have curtains in many of my rooms.

I am always on the lookout for ways
to decorate the windows and still let the light in.
These butterflies are perfect.

To make them, I cut out a template
from card stock of an oval shape.

We chose different colors tissue paper
and cut 2 ovals out for each butterfly.

Then we cut a yellow pipe cleaner in half
and folded it in half. Next, we pushed in a tissue paper oval
and gave the pipe cleaner a twist. Then we repeated with the
second oval and bent the ends so that we could make antennae.

To hang them, we took about 16 inches of
fishing line and tied around the antennae and tied them to dowel rods at the window.

Painting Turtles and Sea Horses

Working on explorers,
got me thinking about ocean art projects.

We started with turtles.
Ceesa
We used the drawing guide
from Deep Space Sparkle to make the shape.
Jo-Jo
One of my favorite pictures we've done this year
are these adorable seahorses.
Jo-Jo

We followed the drawing suggestions at How to Draw it.
Ceesa
We used tempera paints, google eyes, and green glitter. We shook the glitter on before the paint dried.

Swallows, Amazons, Maps and Boats

Ceesa just finished reading Swallows and Amazons.

She loved it and started a few projects of her own making.

I've been finding maps all over the house...

And then Ceesa and Poppa set out to make a boat. She gathered the materials and designed it and Poppa constructed it.

It is fun to set back and watch what the kids can do without you. It reminds me to get out of the way.

Terra Cotta Spring Garden

Over the last year, we've been making terra cotta gardens...

For summer, we made these...

And a moss garden...

For our spring garden, we used an assortment of art supplies...

I think the spring garden is my favorite yet.

Well, its Spring, no wait, maybe it's summer...

Spring is here. It seems a bit early in this part of the country. Normal highs are in the 50's. For the last, 2 weeks it has been in the 70's and even up to the 80's. I had to turn the air conditioning on last night because Little Man woke up at 2:00 fussy, sweating, and hot.

Over the weekend, we went on a nature walk. It was beautiful weather for it. We noticed on the way to church that the forsythia were blooming. The rule of thumb around here is 3 frosts after the first bloom. It is hard to believe that we only have 3 more frosts when we have had snow in April before.

Here's what we found on our walk...
Woodpecker hole. The top looks large enough to be a home for some critter.

Jo-Jo adores the wild onions. Not sure why, but she's been talking about them for the last couple of weeks. When she saw this bunch, she told me we needed a picture.

It's hard to make out, but these are berry bushes. The stems are really reddish, purplish in color.

The fern are greening. I'm not sure they ever really browned this year.

It certainly was a terrific walk!

My Sweet Jo-Jo

Have I mentioned how sweet my Jo-Jo is?
Well she is absolutely cherished.

She is always doing special things to care for us.
She is happiest when she is loving.

The other day, I discovered a trail of hearts.
She left them so we would know how much she loves us.

What a sweet blessing she is!

The Mouse that Appeared at our House

We've been reading Secrets of the Woods.
in the first chapter there is a story about a mouse.

Ceesa wanted to set right off to make a mouse. She tried yarn, but was disappointed with her results. I thought and thought and then searched for this idea. I combined several different ideas to come up with mouse. She is a huge hit with Ceesa and Little Man really likes her too.

I started by watching this video, but I didn't make the legs. For the eyes, I knotted a darker brown yarn and sewed them on.

We've had a mishap already. Little Man knocked mouse into my bowl of yogurt. Luckily, she washed and dried easily.

I was so proud of Ceesa. She thought mouse was ruined, but didn't yell at Little Man. She went to her room. When I called for her, she came out drying her eyes. She is really growing up.

Changes Everyday

Well, my little man certainly is growing. It is rather amazing to watch the things he does. And as a homeschooling Momma it is great to see how interested he is in school...

The magnifying glass is a favorite. He is constantly grabbing it from our nature table and investigating every thing he can get those chubby hands on. He definitely loves nature and to be outside. He got stung by a wasp yesterday and was not too happy about that. Today when he'd hear a buzzing, he'd say, "Bee bug, bee bug."

And then there's the "tar," aka guitar. Notice he's holding it as if he's left handed? He's not, but when I hand it to him the other way, he says, "No Momma, wrong way."

He's such my best boy!

Composer: Bela Bartok

Bela Bartok is one of our composer for this term.

Bartok was born March 25, 1881 in Hungary. His mother began teaching him how to play piano at a very young age. He was quarantined from other children after he was given a vaccine and developed a rash. He would listen to his mother play for much of his amusement. As he grew older, he was especially interested in the folk music of his country. In 1940, Bartók moved to New York to escape from Hitler. He died in September 26, 1945.

We will be working on String Quartet no. 1 in A minor, Concerto for Orchestra (Sz. 116, BB 123), and Mikrokosmos. Mikrokosmos is one of his most loved pieces.
